PSYCHOTHERAPY

Psychotherapy is a longer-term process that focuses more on the person’s internal world, that is their beliefs, attitudes, thoughts and feelings which may be contributing to the difficulties they are experiencing. The emphasis is on exploring these issues in terms of their meaning and origin in personal history. The psychotherapy process strengthens and deepens the relationship with oneself and leads to more satisfying relationships with others.

COUNSELLING

In contrast, with counselling people receive assistance to understand the nature of their difficulty and to identify the resources they need to solve their own problems. They are supported to choose a course of action which will more fully satisfy their current needs. The focus is mostly on the external world of the person, that is, on relationships at work and at home, and on the behaviour of the person in these situations.

PROFESSIONAL SUPERVISION

Professional supervision encourages people to be curious and reflective about all aspects of their professional work and role, to strengthen their professional identity and capacity for leadership. The experiential learning cycle becomes the process through which reflection on past work leads to new learning that is integrated into future practice (Carroll, 2007).  Unless leaders are resourced to think about their work and how it makes them feel, they can feel overwhelmed or defend against the task of connecting with people (Reed, 2008).
